Use all that as foundational stuff. The second interview is about building deeper connections… The second job interview is about building a deeper connection, a deeper relationship, and more chemistry with the entire company. It is about getting them to imagine you as part of the team. You want them to feel as though youre part of the team. So, how do you do that? Sometimes when youre invited back, you are speaking with the same people you spoke with the first time, sometimes theyre new people, and sometimes it’s a mixture. Use these tactics across the board and adjust appropriately based on who you’re speaking with… Ask Again. The first technique I would use is when you are speaking with somebody you have previously spoken with (whether on the phone or in an interview). Ask about something you’ve already spoken about. I call this the ask again technique. Say, Last time I was here you mentioned [insert whatever here]. It really stuck with me. I thought more about it and I wanted to get more insight into that as it relates to [insert whatever here.] Could you elaborate…” This starts a deeper discussion on something youve already spoken about. Going deeper into the conversation on something both of you consider very important builds a deeper relationship. Ask More. The second tactic is to ask additional (new) questions. If you are speaking with somebody who youve previously spoken with previously, you want to make sure youre asking him or her a new batch of questions. If you’re speaking with someone you haven’t spoken with, make sure you have lots and lots of great questions. Good questions show  you are well-researched and you are very, very interested in investigating this company further. And, youre doing it in a smart way. Be Inclusive. The third tip is to be inclusive of other people. By that I mean, reference conversations youve had with others in the organization. [You can even use this in the first round of interviews.] Whether youre speaking with somebody you previously spoken with or youre speaking with new people, one the best tactics you can use is to refer to what you and someone spoke about and then ask for their opinion. For example, “I talked with Susie the other day and she mentioned [insert whatever here]. I loved that and I’d like to get your insight on that. Could you elaborate on that as it relates to [insert whatever here]?” Consider the person you’re interviewing. Whether he or she is a subordinate of Susies, a peer, or a superior, you can adjust the angle of trajectory of your questioning and take it in the direction of that particular individual. You’re showing them you enjoyed speaking with Susie, you found what she said delightful, and also want their opinion. You value their opinion and they with naturally see you as a team player. For example: “Created dynamic sales strategy that boosted quarterly sales activity by 17%, increasing division profits by 12.6%.” That added specificity showcases the types of results that any new employer can expect to enjoy if he or she hires you. #3 No Skills or Core Competencies This resume also lacks the proper keywords needed to get past an ATS(Applicant Tracking System). Most companies use an ATS to automatically screen your resume and one of the major things it looks for are keywords that relate to the position/industry. An average of 75% of resumes are automatically rejected by an ATS so you want to ensure you have the right keywords to let the software know that youre a good match for the position. A resume should have a list of relevant core competencies or skills.This allows you to easily insert relevant keywords and tailor them to each position you apply to. Example: #4 Consider the Work Experience Word Choice We already touched on this a bit, but it’s worth repeating: word choice matters. Your verbs should be active and powerful, and your adjectives should help to reinforce the importance of your prior job roles. Don’t just describe yourself as being “responsible for” some activity; choose words that are more active and productive. For example: Don’t write that you were “responsible for meeting January 2010 sales goal.:Do note that you “led sales team in achieving January 2010 sales goal, increasing sales by 23%.”Don’t write that you “represented company at trade shows increasing new customer base.”Instead, write that you “served as company trade show ambassador, enhancing new client acquisition by 15% over previous trade show outreach.” The goal is to insert value wherever possible. You want that hiring manager to read your resume and think, “This guy/gal is a real go-getter. If he/she can provide our company with these kinds of benefits, it would be a mistake to pass on the opportunity!” You’ll also notice that there are areas within that work experience section where the candidate does promote value. That’s commendable, but even those areas could use some tightening to make them more dynamic. While benefits like increased accuracy and reduced overtime are impressive, those achievements would be even more impressive if they were backed up by statements defining the bottom line benefits they created for the employer. #5 Spelling Errors The example above has a spelling error and even a single error is enough to get you disqualified. Always read your resume over and give it over to someone else to proofread as well. #6 Poor Design and Layout The aesthetics in the example arent really pleasing. Sure, the content is what matters the most but you should also organize and format your resume to be easy on the eye. Hiring managers only spend a few seconds looking at your resume so you want to ensure your resume is neatly organized. Just make sure you dont include any designs, fancy colors or charts on your resume. And as much as I work with many recruiters who seem to starting to grasp the need for this change to be capitalised upon, many more are still: Offering very little training to help recruiters integrate social media into an already busy business process. Drafting a social media policy which is more about “don’t do that” rather than “it can help you do this” and worse tucking it away in HR to get dusty assuming that this is classed as what lawyers will argue is reasonable response and the business is covered. Seeing social media as free and easy hence they are not taking it seriously enough. And this is resulting in lack of control and perceived ROI and some recruiters are ok with that(???) I see so many silly behaviours demonstrated every day by recruiters who need to be better at what they do if they (agency recruiters) are to get anything out of this recruitment revolution (and work better with clients, in-house HR and candidates).  Typical behaviours include: Badly made up profiles expecting to be chatted up (score) Very little “how to” policy â€" more of a “don’t you dare” Primary social media activity is #job #hiring #jobs #me #MyCompany (yawn) Lots of candidate sourcing on LinkedIn, lots of job posting EVERYWHERE very little other meaningful activity You do great job of making recruitment look easy (you’re training clients to do their own recruitment) stop advertising so much! Very little lead gen, very little client sourcing/maintaining, very little competitor analysis Facebook is the devil and must be avoided at all costs Assumption that everyone is a job seeker Your website is where you invest your cash and time (see previous blogs about your LinkedIn company page being more important than your website) You are a LION and have a LinkedIn group therefore you are God! Behaviours are trained, or are as a result of a lack of training and the recruiter fills the void with what they believe is common sense. Recruitment leaders need to seriously consider this new environment (new to them, perhaps not new to their staff?) and think about some of the following: What are your objectives for being on social media? In addition, it highlights that you’re genuinely interested in the job and are keen to weigh up start dates with your own commitments, such as notice periods.
